Carrie Bucalo wrote The Spiritual Journey of Healing in 2010, shortly after her time as a Carmelite nun in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She spent three years in silence and solitude, asking God all the questions her heart could think of: "God, where were you during the abuse of my childhood? What happened to my soul? How do I handle painful memories during prayer and church on Sundays? How do I pray and believe after what happened? How do I keep my Catholic faith after abuse?"
Carrie believes that much work still needs to be done on the topic of trauma and healing in the Catholic Church, "But this is a starting point, and it adds to the idea of a much-needed Theology for Survivors and the Wounded. The Spiritual Journey of Healing is a way to look at abuse and trauma, through the lens of the Catholic faith and the Carmelite charism."
